About Bowen

The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique is a modality that supports your body in doing what it is designed to do, which is to heal itself. It is a gentle form of body work in which very subtle moves performed over the muscles and connective tissue send messages deep into the body, contributing to a preferred, relaxed and balanced way of wellbeing.

There are frequent but very essential pauses throughout the session that allow time for the body to respond and support the operation of body parts and processes. The practitioner addresses the whole body.

The Bowen Technique is a gentle non-invasive therapy in which the skill of the Bowen practitioner is “tissue tension sense” meaning that the practitioners work through light clothing.

The technique supports the body holistically, not only the musculoskeletal framework, but also the fascia, nervous and internal organ systems. The body’s integrated response supports circulation and lymphatic drainage as well as assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.

The late Tom Bowen of Geelong, Australia developed this technique in the 1950s and the world wide teaching began in 1986 by Oswald and Elaine Rentsch.

Bowtech® and Bowenwork® are the international trademarks owned and administered by Bowen Therapy New Zealand® that ensure the integrity of Tom Bowen’s technique is maintained.
